If you’re like me, picking a paint color is a nightmare. I love the Pottery Barn paint colors used in their catalog, but they are found at the Sherwin Williams store for $50 a gallon. Way too much for me. The Magnolia Home Paint at Target is $47 a gallon! When I discovered how people get designer paint prices for so much less, I knew I had to share the secret!
Bring Your Own Pottery Barn Paint Color Sample for Matching
The first method is pretty commonly used. Bring a paint sample or piece of a painted wall and the store associates can put it through their color matching machine. I’ve tried this a few times with some success, but this method does leave a margin for error. The associates have to custom tint the paint to get as close as possible.
Bring the Pottery Barn Paint (or other designer)Color Number
I think this is one of those decorating “secrets” that is well known by interior designers and people in the business, but something an average homeowner may not know. You don’t have to buy designer Pottery Barn paint colors, at those stores. Lots of stores have the colors formulas in their computer. So I can bring my Pottery Barn paint color number to Lowe’s and pay almost half the price. They have successfully mixed Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore colors for me for around $20-$25 per gallon. Another bonus is that even though Pottery Barn discontinued their colors, they are still in the computer at Home Depot and Lowes!
At the time of this blog the big box stores don’t have the magnolia home paint color codes yet, but I know they will soon. In the meantime you can get a sample and bring it for matching.
Here are Five More Paint Tips We’ve Learned Along the Way
Test the Paint in the Room for a Few Days Before Buying
This one is so important and will save you so much time and money. If you’re impatient this one will be difficult for you. Lighting can really effect the way paint looks at different times during the day. You may love the paint in natural light and hate it at night with lamps. It’s important to test it for a few days before you decide. My favorite way to test a color is to paint a peel and stick swatch like this one.
You just paint these squares and then peel and stick them on the wall. They are easy to remove once you decide on your paint color.
What to Do When You Love a Paint Color but its Too Dark
Paint pros can help! Take the sample or number and ask them to mix the color a percentage lighter. Here’s a Pottery Barn Paint Color known as called Functional Gray. I loved the tone but its too dark for what I wanted.
I purchased it from Lowe’s paint department by providing the paint number: SW 7024. I had the paint associate mix it 50% lighter than the swatch.
How to Decide Between Satin, Semi-Gloss or Flat
For me, there is only one answer. FLAT PAINT. You know in Mommy Dearest when Joan Crawford yells “No Wire Hangers”? Well I yell “No shiny walls”
Shiny paint is meant for trim, in my opinion. Shiny walls show every single flaw and they just look uneven and bad. Very Very Bad. Many years ago a painter convinced me to try flat paint and I have never turned back. Trust me, you will love it. And you CAN buy washable and mildew resistant flat paint. My master bathroom is painted in flat paint that is mold and mildew resistant and washable.
I know you’re sitting there right now arguing with me because you think you can’t wash flat/matte paint. Besides the fact that you can buy washable matte paint, it’s also WAY easier to touch up.You can just spot fix marks on the wall and quickly blend the paint in. Here’s what the flat paint looks like in our Master Bathroom
Save Money on Paint, But Don’t Cheap Out on Paint
You never have to pay full Sherwin Williams paint prices for a gallon of paint, but if you buy the cheapest paint there is you will know it. A good quality paint is easier to roll, needs less coats and has a better finish. If you buy the cheapest paint, You will need primer and several coats and you’ll end up spending more in the end. Buy quality paint! Sherwin Williams often has coupons, making their paint prices much more affordable, while the big box stores all have brands in the $20-$30 range that are really high quality. Lowes and Home Depot prices are often much more affordable than Sherwin Williams Paint Prices, and are very high quality.
Buy Quality Painting Tools
I have made the mistake of buying the cheapest painting tools, many many times, but I have finally learned. If you buy the lowest price brushes and rollers your paint job will look like crap. There’s no way around it. You’ll have fuzz from the rollers or bristles from the brush on the wall. They won’t spread the paint as easily, so you’ll have to use more paint, and you’ll have brush or roller marks on the wall. Spend a little more money so your paint looks more pro. It’s worth it.
