Hello! Michelle here from Our Crafty Mom. Today, I’ll show you how to make a succulent terrarium using faux succulents and a beautiful farmhouse style lantern. The best part is you can make it for under $25! I was inspired by the new Pier One catalog and the gorgeous succulent terrarium on the cover using faux succulents:
Of course, this terrarium costs more than $25, so I did some research and found a beautiful farmhouse style lantern and faux succulents to put this beautiful version under $25! Let’s take a look!
How To Make A Beautiful Succulent Terrarium
Supplies
Faux Succulents
White Rocks
Moss
This is very simple to put together and you can tailor it to your color scheme. For example, if you wanted to add some color you could use blue rocks instead of white. They even had a beautiful lavender color at the craft store. Simply cover the bottom of the lantern with the rocks.
Next add moss and the succulents. I separated the large aloe succulent as it was quite large and I wanted to balance both sides.
The hen and chick succulents are my favorite. They are quite large and add a lot of dimension to the terrarium.
Simply layer the succulents in the terrarium until you are happy with the placement. The display looks very pretty if you add succulents outside of the terrarium as well. I was able to complete this display for under $25! Of course that was with a 50% coupon, which always helps! The craft stores will often have the greenery 40% off as well.
You can definitely use real succulents if you like with the addition of potting soil. The lantern has an opening at the top so the succulents can breathe. But they make faux succulents so realistic looking that I actually prefer them to real as I don’t exactly have a green thumb!

Last year I came across a blogger post making a lantern with $tree frames. Could make a terrarium same way and whole bunch cheaper. Wish I could remember what blog it was but do remember how to make lantern. Think getting some frames and thinking on how to do it would work, then go from there to make your terrarium, worth a shot. Great idea and project. Getting so faux succulents are more expensive than real ones.
