It’s here! I finally get to share our finished farmhouse style family room with you! If you’ve been following along you know that we are guest bloggers in the One Room Challenge. You can see over 200 bloggers hard work here. This is our first time participating and it was so much fun!
We’ve only done a couple things in this room since we moved in three years ago yet this is the most used room in our house. It was long overdue for a makeover because it looked like a sad mod podge of furniture that didn’t match. You can see the before pictures in our week one post here. This challenge really gave me a chance to step back and plan the room. So let’s start the tour!
Here is our One Room Challenge Farmhouse Style Family Room Reveal!

Before we started the challenge we had updated the fireplace and painted the room gray (Sherwin Williams Light French Gray) and we added farmhouse trim around the doorway.
The farmhouse door trim really makes the entryway pop. You can see the old style in the hall behind it. You can download printable instructions to make the door trim below.
I knew I wanted a feature wall with a great picture to be the focal point of the room. Mike really did a great job creating the wood wall behind the couch. He calls this style vertical shiplap. You can see how he built the wall in Week Four.
To stay in budget I wanted to reuse some things we already had. We moved this sofa table from our office to the family room. Mike built it a couple years ago and its been buried under my work stuff for a while. It looks much better in this room.
There was no money in my budget for brand new end tables. So we updated some that have been sitting in our basement. Mike built the new top for the tables and I painted them. You can see the end table makeover here.
These lamps are $10 metal Walmart lamps I’ve had for several years. I have never used chalk paint on metal but the result is gorgeous! They were very simple to paint and distressing them was also easy. I used Rustoleum brand chalk paint for the first time.
I used the same chalk paint on these candlesticks. These are Pottery Barn brand and were a thrift shop find I got with a bunch of other stuff for $40. The chalk paint worked just as well on wood, and sanding them gave them the perfect distressed look.We found this great oil can at an antique store along with the cotton stems.
The largest purchases we made for the room were the Ikea Ektorp couch and chair. I have been wanting these pieces for a very long time and I promise you, they didn’t disappoint! I LOVE them! They came in five boxes and had to be assembled but it took Mike less than an hour to put them together. The gray chair is about two years old from Pottery Barn. It is hard to tell if there’s really any difference between the two, except a major price difference!
The couch and chair were under $1,000 total, even with shipping. The slipcovers can be bleached and there are replacement covers in a few different colors. We have two dogs so I will keep you posted on how these hold up.
The curtains are perfect for the room and have a light gray paisley pattern printed on them. I got them at Homegoods for $29 a pair. Our throw pillows were old so I just added new cushion covers for $8.99 each from Hobby Lobby.
This rug came from an online store I found called Lulu and Georgia. With shipping it was only $260 for the 8×10 rug. You can find it here. It’s brand new but looks super vintage.

For wall hangings I wanted something pretty with a personal meaning. I framed these inexpensive prints from a street vendor in Paris. They may not have cost a lot but they are priceless because they remind me of our family trip to Europe and date night in Paris! ♥
Last but not least is a very special handcrafted Farmhouse Sign from an Etsy shop called Hoosier Farmhouse Interiors. I worked with the owner Katie. She created the solid wood piece from a picture I gave her and it truly makes my family room feel like home.

Looks great! I too am considering that same Ikea couch. Do you still love it?
yes! Absolutely!
What white did you use on the trim and shiplap wall with the light french gray wall color? It looks very nice!
This room is just gorgeous now. I too looked at getting some Ektorp furniture but changed my mind buying something else. Now I am in the middle of creating a white couch cover for our one year old Lazyboy couch. I hope our family turns out half as nice as yours did. Its gorgeous.
